X: I Am The One

Ewan
The recruits. Duncan told me about all of them.
All the people Duncan wished to join the Wardens before Ostagar.
My almost-brothers.
Daveth, the pickpocket he saved from the gallows. He died during the Joining as he couldn't bear the Taint.
Jory, the knight of Redcliffe. Had a sudden change of mind and drew his weapon against Duncan, forcing him to kill him.
Dalen Mahariel, the Dalish hunter. He refused to leave his clan and his missing friend. Died for the taint.
Prince Salman Aeducan. He was framed for the murder of his brother, and was exiled in the Deep Roads. He was never found.
Brand Brosca, the castless who managed to win the proving. He disappeared from the Orzamarr prisons. I found his body in Jarvia's hideout, imprisoned along his friend Leske.
Johanne Tabris, daughter of Cyrion. She disappeared the day of her wedding. Her betrothed Nelaros and her cousin Soris raided the Arl of Denerim’s palace searching for her, but she was never found.
Cora Cousland. She refused to leave her family behind and was captured by Rendon Howe.
Ewan Amell.
Myself.
For a strange whim of Fate, I'm the only one who chose to follow Duncan and survived the Joining. I'm the one who survived Ostagar, the one who ended the Blight by killing the Archdemon Urthemiel. I'm the one who killed the Mother and choose to spare the Architect, the very darkspawn that started the Fifth Blight. I choose to undergo the Dark Ritual with Morrigan and to let her go with my son.
Now I choose to save my son, and I’m about to die for it.
I’m not a “chosen one”: I'm the one who chooses, and deals with the consequences.
I always was.

Eloise
It was eerie to see him. I had seen abominations before, but it was easier to deal with them, since the possession always carried a physical transformation... this time was different: his body, his looks, his voice was the same, yet he wasn’t him, not anymore.
He took a step towards us, a creepy smile on his face. Morrigan and Carver put themselves the way, I don’t know if to keep him from attacking us or the other way around.
“This is foolish Chatha,” Morrigan growled, “You’ll end up killing you both.”
Ewan-Chatha laughed: “He’s but a human, sister... now we are more than that...”
“You think you know Mother’s ways?” she laughed mirthlessly, “None of us knows her true nature.”
“You may be Flemeth’s daughter.” Carver added, “But you are nothing like her. You wouldn’t have been stuck in this pit for centuries if you were. I have seen her magic, yours is not even comparable to what she can do.”
That seemed to piss her off: “How dare you to-” Ewan’s body stumbled and fell to his knees with a roar of pain. “What in the Fade is happening? It... hurts...”
Morrigan grinned: “The Warden I know would never go down without a fight, Chatha... you’re paying the price of your pride!”
I felt a tug to my skirt and look down to Kieran’s wide eyes: “Take me to Father, please!”
I frowned: “That’s not a good idea, Kieran, Chata’s...”
“Chata’s killing him. He’s dying. Please...”

Ewan
Blackness. That was nothing like the Fade I know. It was empty, devoid of shapes and dreams, no lights, no bodies, no forms... I was alone.
I refused to surrender, I hadn’t come this far just to be killed by the first broodmother-abomination with a talent for body-swapping that crosses my path!
“You are an annoying one, Warden.” Chata’s voice echoed.
“I am not going to give up like this, Chatha.” I snapped back at her. I turned and saw her: an ethereal form of the woman she once was, not the horrid monster but a sensual and smooth woman’s body very like Morrigan’s... I glanced around and realized I was still floating in darkness but I had a sort of physical form now: naked and floating in black. Well, that’s a step forward, I guess...
“You annoying little fucker, what happened to In Death Sacrifice? You gave yourself up to me to save your son, let it go now! It’s your body I want, I don’t care about your soul, demons can have it!”
Demons! That’s an idea! I recalled Flemeth’s words and a plan formed in my mind: I’d be an arrogant fool to think it could work, but an arrogant fool is exactly what I needed to be if I could even stand a chance...

Cullen
As Ewan-Chatha collapsed, Carver, Anders, Morrigan and I had surrounded him, blades and staves pointed at him. Jowan and Eloise were trying to calm the kid down, but he was keeping on yelling his father was dying and he should get to him.
It was the perfect occasion to strike him down, to kill Chatha and free Ewan of her influece... but the problem was still the same: you can’t kill the demon without killing the mage. He was just like an abomination but neither of us wanted to strike first.
“He would want this.” Anders muttered.
“He would want to live.” Morrigan recanted.
“But he would want her to die.” Carver objected.
“We can’t kill Chatha, without killing Ewan.” I sighed.
“Are you sure there’s nothing left of him?” Carver asked turning to Anders.
“I don’t know.” he admitted, “When Justice entered my body, our conscience melted... not immediately, but in time we became one and the same... with Chatha and Ewan it may work differently, he may be something else, she’s not a demon, not really...”
“You’re right.” Morrigan nodded, “Even I don’t know what she is... from what I’ve learned, Flemeth trained each of her daughters differently, and she had years in the Deep Roads to search for lost knowledge...”
Ewan’s body started to spasm and twitch. The sight tugged something in my mind, but I couldn’t place it. “What’s happening?” I asked.
“He’s dying, damn you!” Kieran shouted from behind me. Eloise and Jowan could barely contain him, and his eyes had started to glow. “Let me get to him!”
“It’s too dangerous Kieran!” Morrigan shouted alarmed, “Do not tap into that power, I mean it!”
“Mother, I don’t want him to die!”
I glanced back and forth between father and son, then it hit me. “He doesn’t want to either.”
“What do you mean?” Carver asked.
I pointed at him: “He’s fighting. This spasms... he’s in a lucid dreaming.”
“You mean he’s in the Fade?” Anders asked frowning.
“He’s fighting her... he’s performing a Harrowing.”

Ewan

“This is the Void, Warden.” Chatha laughed, “We’re in your dying mind, you can’t fight me, I am you now.”
“You may be inside of my mind, attack my soul, but you either forgot -or never knew- what it means to be me.” I scoffed.
She tilted her head amused: “I certainly won’t pretend to be you, Warden. And as I already told you, I don’t care for the Taint, and I can sense you’re different... this flow of blood magic is keeping it under control.”
I rose my brows in mock surprise. “You can feel that?”
She laughed: “I am Flemeth’s daughter, I practiced all kinds of magic. From the womb, even.”
I grinned: “Then you should know that before I was a Warden, I was a Circle Mage.”
She scoffed: “So?”
“You mean you really don’t know how it works?” I cackled, “By the Maker, you really are something... you enter my body, try to possess me and you don’t know...”
“Know what?” she growled. I could see she was starting to be pissed off by my attitude and that was good.
“Know that as a Circle mage, I was already promised to someone else.”
“Promised?”
“I went through a Harrowing, and this means that there’s only one entity who can possess me.”
“What entity?”
ME.
We turned and saw it. I called it, and her pride and mine had acted like a beacon leading it to us, while my pain and panic had let it in. Flemeth was right, Mouse would always find me.
GET YOUR HANDS OFF WHAT’S MINE, WITCH. HE LET ME IN, I HAD WAITED THIS FOR TOO LONG FOR YOU TO COME HERE AND STEAL MY PRIZE.
“The Fade he let you!” she shouted outraged, “I entered him first, begone demon!”
The gigantic pride demon stalked towards her, its claws strained, his fangs grinding.
I AM HIS PRIDE AND HIS WISDOM, HIS WEAKNESS AND STRENGTH, HIS SIN AND VIRTUE. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE HERE!
“I have the right of strength and skill.” she scoffed, “You want to fight! Let’s fight then!” she moved her hands as she was about to conjuring a fireball, but nothing came out of the blackness.
“We’re in my dying mind, Chatha.” I laughed, “You said that before. I set the rules: you have no power here.”
She growled in frustration: “Neither has it.” she shifted into a fighting stance still facing Mouse, “Let’s solve it the old fashioned way, let the strongest soul survive!”

Jowan
“Are you sure this is a good idea?” I asked, “I know I’m not the most qualified to say it, but he doesn’t look like he’s in the Fade...”
“He’s not.” Anders confirmed, “If he’s fighting, he’s fighting inside his own mind.”
“And what’s the difference?” Morrigan asked. We all stared at her in disbelief.
“Well, the Fade is the Dream Plane, another level of existence...” Eloise started, but she cut her off.
“You speak the words of the Circle, girl. The Fade, the Beyond, Setheneran, whatever you want to call it, is something real, a place beyond all places that anyone - even the dwarves, under the right circumstances - can enter. But it’s also the place where magic comes from, and from where does magic come?”
“From the Fade?” Anders chuckled. Morrigan glared at him.
I took a deep breath and
“Blood magic...” I murmured, “Magic comes from us. From inside of us. The Fade is in our mind. We shape it.”
“Our Fade form is our conscience...” Eloise murmured, “But it’s also our soul. That’s why you can’t die in the Fade because the soul is immortal...”
“And if you get killed in the Fade you become tranquil because you cut your consciousness off your soul.” Anders finished.
“Really? Is that what happens?” I asked shocked.
“Not always, but it may happen.” Anders admitted.
“It is more complicated that this, but you have it almost correct.” Morrigan smirked. “The point is...”
“WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT THE POINT?” Kieran shouted. We all turned to the little boy.
“Watch your language, young man!” Morrigan reprimanded him.
“Then you all do something! Who cares where he is, he’s dying!”
“Actually it can make a difference.” Cullen was kneeling beside Ewan. “If he is in the Fade fighting, we can help him.”
“How?” I asked wile kneeling beside him.
He glared at me dead in the eye “With your help.”
Wait... did he mean...?

Ewan
I backed away as Chatha charged Mouse head down. She punched right through his chest and her hand got stuck in the hard skin of the demon.
I frowned: I was hoping for Mouse to take care of her and figure out a way to deal with him later, but I wasn’t expecting what happened after.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING, WOMAN? Mouse asked, panic in its voice.
“I... I don’t know, I’m stuck!” she said as she was trying to pull her arm put of the demon’s chest.
LET ME GO!
“I can’t!” she yelled in panic as she was pulled more towards the demon.
“That's not supposed to happen.” a familiar voice said behind me. I turned in shock: what did Flemeth of all people is doing here?
“A soul is not forced upon the unwilling.” she stated. Watching the two of them struggle. “They should have destroyed each other, and you should be free...”
“What are you doing here?” I asked her. She gave me a cryptic smile.
“All of you always consider me the bad one in everything, but tell me, Warden... when did I ever do something that wasn't helping you or the ones like you?”
I scoffed, then paused: a million things came to mind I couldn't even know where to begin! Indeed she saved me and Alistair from the Tower of Ishal, albeit in selfish interest... yet I was there, still alive thanks to Morrigan and – directly and indirectly – to her. And she helped the Hawkes fleeing Lothering, albeit Carver confirmed she didn't do it quite selflessly... And yes, she brought Mouse to me before, but she intended to warn me about Chatha, and Mouse was the only way... she didn't do anything to help it, in fact, she looked... relieved? When Mouse was cast away... She seeks to possess Morrigan's body, of course... but didn't she just say that a soul is not forced upon the unwilling? What if Morrigan misunderstood the words of the Black Grimoire? It appears Chatha did, her possessing me didn't quite go according to plan... Everything on Flemeth that wasn't legend but first-hand experience should tell me she's... at least benevolent to me.
“You... you do have a point. But you didn't answer my question.”
“As always, Warden, I am helping myself by helping you.” she smirked, “You will need help to fight that.” she pointed at the two spirits fighting.
I watched in horror the scene in front of my eyes: Chatha and Mouse were... melting and melding, becoming an indistinct fluid mass that mixed and combined in front of my eyes. Their cries for pain harmonized in a chord of pain until both of them got one voice, one shape, one soul...
I should have expected it. Anders told me what happened with Justice.
They had blended.
They had become one.
“I BELIEVE THIS SETTLES THE ARGUMENT.” they - it - said turning towards me.

Eloise
“No, I won’t let you do it.” Morrigan hissed.
“Then what? You want to bleed someone dry to send someone else?” Jowan recanted, “We need someone who’s already connected to Ewan, his son is his best chance.”
“I do have a bond of blood with him!”
“Forged with blood magic, and blood magic may undo it.” Jowan shook his head “It may not work and we got only one shot.”
I didn’t like the plan: “He’s but a boy, what if he becomes an abomination?”
“I’m not going to.” Kieran pouted. I sighed: he may have been a creepy kid with an Old God’s soul but he was acting like your average six years old now.
“You don’t understand!” Morrigan turned to Anders, “He’s got the soul of an Old God, you know what this means, don't you?”
Anders frowned then widened his eyes as the realization hit him: “Oh Maker! You’re right we can’t send him in the Fade, not inside Ewan’s mind anyway!”
“And why is that?” Carver asked with a frown.
“In the Fade his soul will manifest in its true form.” Anders explained, “When I am in the Fade my Justice side takes over... what do you think it would happen to Kieran?”
“Shit.” I muttered, “You’re right, we want to save him, not killing him.”
“I will not kill him!” Kieran cried.
“Not intentionally, Kieran...” Morrigan knelt by her child, “But he’s a Grey Warden... and you are...”
“I'm not an Old God.” the boy whined.
“You bear the soul of one.” She replied.
“'Tis not my soul.” he snapped, “He wants to help too, but he'll let me do it.”
“He?” Morrigan frowned, “Kieran, what are you...?”
“We're not the same.” The boy replied, “As long as we work together we coexist, I don't have to fight him, though, or we will die.”
She hesitated for a split second then shook her head: “You are too young to enter the Fade, you're not ready...”
“He is Old. He knows, he'll guide me.”
We had formed a circle, Cullen and Carver knelt by Ewan’s head chanting some templar Canticle while us mages gathered at his feet with Chatha’s body. Each one of us drop some some of our blood in a wooden bowl, then Jowan collected some of Ewan’s too from a bite wound on his shoulder then we poured it on the broodmother’s body and Jowan began chanting.
Chatha’s old form lifted in the air and an explosion of violet magic blasted from his body and wrapped Morrigan. Her eyes rolled up and she moaned as her mind was about to enter the Fade...
Then the unexpected happened: Kieran pushed her mother away and closed his eyes in concentration...
“KIERAN!” Morrigan shouted, but it was too late.
The boy was in.

Ewan
The aberration stalked towards me as I backed slowly. The sight was repulsive: it was like Chatha had grown some extra pair of eyes and horns, her skin scaly and bumpy, her fingers now claws, her face a melted mask of horror with fangs protruding over her bottom lip. I thought she was frightening as a broodmother, but now she was worse.
“Seriously, girl?” Flemeth stood still defiantly, “All those years waiting and plotting... and you meld with a pride spirit?”
“I AM PRIDE AND WISDOM.” it recanted, “I KNOW WHO YOU ARE NOW, MOTHER.”
“You are no daughter of mine.” she snarled, “You failed yourself, and in turn, you failed me. If you know who I am, you should know you stand no chance against me.”
“IT IS NOT YOU I WANT.” the creature turned to me, it's eyes hungry, “LET’S ADD SOME WARDEN MAGIC TO THE MIXTURE, SHALL WE?” it leered at me with a toothy grin.
I couldn’t move fast enough: her paw shot forward and grabbed me by the neck. I cried in pain as it was strangling me, but I didn’t feel suffocating, only a roaring pain that shot through my whole body. Suddenly the abomination let me go.
“WHAT’S HAPPENING? WHY CAN’T WE...”
“Because he is not willing to submit.” Flemeth laughed. “His soul is his own, he may have let you in, but you can't blend if he doesn't want to.”
“WE DID.”
“You were willing.” Flemeth cackled. “You both sought power and possession, you let your soul open and now you're paying the price of it.”
The creature tossed me away, groaning in frustration.
“TO THE VOID WITH IT.” it growled, “I WILL DESTROY YOU AND I'LL BE THE ONLY ONE IN YOUR MIND... AND YOU," the creature snarled at Flemeth, "DO NOT INTERFERE! I. WILL. HAVE. HIS BODY!”
Flemeth shook her head glancing at me “He is pretty, but I wouldn't go that far for a man!” she jested.
“Thank you for the mental image, Flemeth.” I groaned. I felt dirtier than ever before imagining... no, cancel this image, burn it with fire...
The creature roared in rage and charged at me, horns down. I stood but Flemeth put herself between us, projecting a wall of light the creature crashed against. The impact sent both Flemeth and I flying backwards and landing on our butts.
“She is strong.” she admitted, her tone light as ever.
Chatha shook her head stunned but quickly recovered and charged at us again. We braced for the impact, charging a fireball, when I heard the song.
Heru am'in lothl'ir eren
Halan ethir ma'nedan
Ar'u lothlen halen inan banal
Do'lin dirtharaven
Jowan
“What’s that?” I asked surprised. Kieran had suddenly begun singing and waving.
Long forgotten dreams forced on me, to help the ones I lost... Alone and forgotten I see nothing but the promise of the grey blood...
I knew this melody, it was a song I've heard once in Dragon's Claw tavern, "I am the One" I believe it was called. I didn't know there was an elvish version, though, and the lyrics didn't match perfectly to the one in King's tongue. The version I knew spoke of hope and struggle, this was... darker.
The boy kept singing. I noticed Anders and Carver exchanging a worried glance.

Ara han'im
Halam'lothi hanin
Ara han'im
Heru am'in

I'll be the one who will restore forgotten glory” I translated, “I'll be the one...Who leads himself?
“Why is he singing an elven song?” Eloise wondered.
“More importantly, what is he doing?” Anders asked.
“I wish I knew.” I replied.
“You must have an idea, though.” Carver insisted. “You're three mages and a templar!”
“I...” Anders shook his head, “I wouldn’t know for sure but Archdemons control and rally darkspawn through singing...”
“You think this song is his way to tap into some Old God magic?” Cullen asked worried.
“It may be.” I admitted, suddenly frightened at the thought, “I just hope the kid knows what he’s doing...”

Ewan
Chatha froze listening to the song. The voice kept singing, crystalline and enthralling. It sounded like a child’s voice, at the same time blended with a melodic bass roaring in harmony with it.

Heru am'in on loth na him
Ir tel'abe ven'in ulen

I turned to Flemeth and saw she was smiling like a Mabari who got to the Bronto stew.
“What’s that, Flemeth?” I asked.
The wind of change forces an order upon me, And fate is rolling in without any sympathy... Something Old. Coming for you.
Something... oh, no! “Kieran? Is he here?”
“Yes... Can't you feel it? Isn't that familiar to you?”
Realization hit me: “Flemeth, no! We both could die. It would be like killing an Archdemon...”
She laughed: “You still don't get it, do you? A spirit can't be forced on an unwilling soul. 'Tis not the clash that kills an Archdemon, but the will of a Warden that sets them free.”
My eyes widened. Free? Does it mean... I shook my head, I had to focus on the immediate danger. I turned to Chatha who was still enthralled by the song, the song of an Old God... She may have exploited Flemeth’s knowledge to become resistant to it when she was a broodmother, and having become one with a Pride Demon may have made her stronger but at a cost: she was now vulnerable to the charm of Urthemiel’s voice.
And I realized I was too: I felt stronger, rallied: my son was singing for me, his voice giving me power, strength, confidence...
I knew what to do.
“My head is a mess already, let’s clean up a bit...”

Cullen
Ewan’s body started shaking so hard I thought it would split in two. Suddenly everyone focused on him, ready to strike at the first sign of physical change. Our Harrowing bond was broken when Chatha entered his body, but I was now feeling it again: I felt his personality rise and roar, his magic surge and I recognized it as his. On a harder convulsion I spotted Carver rising his blade to strike, but I stopped him: he may have been trained with a templar, but he wasn’t one.
He looked at me questioningly and I just smiled.
Morrigan shivered: “This doesn't feel right... We must stop this...”
Kieran had stopped singing, but he didn’t show to hear our calls. Morrigan was about to shake him but Eloise lounged for her hand and stopped him.
“Wait! His mind is still in the Fade, do not disturb him.”
“I know how's like to be in the Fade, thank you very much!” the witch snarled.
“Then you should know better.” Eloise recanted, “We may be poor ignorant Circle mages but we do know touching someone walking in the Fade is dangerous. Trust him.”
“He's but a boy!” she yelled, “And he doesn't know the half of the danger he's in.”
“Then don't add another half to it!” the elf yelled back.
Jowan put a hand on Morrigan's shoulder: “She's right, you know. You must trust your son...”
“He's but a boy...” she repeated, “He's...”
I returned my attention to Ewan. He had stopped shaking and was now smiling. That didn’t reassure me at all.

Ewan
I stared in awe at the huge form in front of me. It was blurry and indistinct but I know who he was. The flap of his wings had banished Chatha-Mouse out of this place, but I felt only a warm breeze. I let him in, I opened my heart and my soul to him, and now here he was: a man wrapped in an aura of power. He wasn’t just a kid, not here. He look older than he was, more mature, fed to the power of the ancient soul he bore. He was an Old God reborn.
“Urthemiel.” I whispered.
“No. Not Urthemiel, father: I’m Kieran. Just Kieran.” he smiled and approached me: I thought his form was shifting, one moment he looked like a dragon, one moment he was a man, but then I realized it was both: a dragon enfolding the shape of a young man with a golden heart, his aura glowing, pulsing like a heartbeat as he came near me.
He didn't have the soul of an Old God: the Old God was all around him, shielding him, enfolding him, but they were two separate souls, two being coexisting. That's how he tapped into Urthemiel's knowledge, I realized, the Old God spoke to him...Kieran and Urthemiel live in symbiosis.
I reached for him but the Dragon jerked away: “No, father you can’t...”
“It’s all right, Kieran.” my smile reassured him and I caressed his head. Touching my son’s soul brought tears to my eyes: I lost it and enfolded him in a hug.
“See? That didn’t kill you.” he rubbed his face in my chest.
“Our souls touched and didn’t destroy each other...”
“Because neither of you is forcing himself upon me, Kieran.” I whispered, “And I accept you as my son. I will never be in danger from you, and you from me.” I loosened the hug and placed my hand on his heart. “You have a human soul in you. You are my son, Kieran, you truly are. Urthemiel is a part of you, but it is you I see, not just an ancient soul. You're not a vessel but a new being, born from love and sacrifice.”
“Love?” he blinked confused, “Mother told me...”
“I do love your mother. Not in the same way I love Zevran, but I really do.” I blushed at my slip, maybe he was a tad too young to know who Zevran was -anything about him, actually- but he didn't seemed curious or surprised. I assumed Morrigan had already filled him in.. “She’s not only my friend, but she saved my life more than once, she was my confidant and together we lived through the darkest period of my life... and out of it, she managed to give me the greatest gift of all: you.”
He lowered his gaze: “You don’t even know me.” he murmured bitterly “Mother sought to that.”
“Hey!” I lifted his chin so he looked at me. He now looked like the little kid I saw in the Crossroads and that reached the deep roads with Morrigan. This, I believe, was his truest self. “Your mother did what she needed to. I always trusted her, and I believe she’s doing her best for you. You are a special being, unique, and she’s best suited to protect you. All I can do is trust you both and love you, even if I can’t be with you... Though I would really want to, if I could. Because you are my son, and I love you, even if I don't really know you.”
“Protect him from who?” Flemeth asked. I spun, instinctively shielding Kieran from her.
“I see.” she said with a smile. “I am the enemy. Again.”
I looked back and forth between Kieran and Flemeth, unsure of what to do. “I... I think it depends on what are your intentions.”
Flemeth's brows perked with interest as she approached us: “That's a nice question, Warden, one not many ask. Morrigan hid the child well, and I need his help... but he's not ready yet.” she placed a hand on his heart and I saw the shining aura inside of his chest had the shape of a griffon, the same crest as the Grey Wardens. “I'll see you again in your dreams, kid. I'll tell you when time will come.”
“Time for what?” I asked.
She straightened and smiled at me, a sweet smile I had never seen on her face. “The time to lift him of his burden and see what kind of mother Morrigan really is.” she said cryptically before vanishing into thin air.
I turned to my son again, checking for something changed in him. He smiled at me as the Fade slowly dissolved around us, but I think it was Urthemiel who spoke: “I understand now what she always says: you are a special person, Warden: instead of death you gave me not only my life but freedom to be whatever I want... Thank you, father...”
His words echoed in my mind as I slowly came to my senses.

Eloise
Kieran opened his eyes and smiled. I could see tears glistening there as he was hugging his mother. Morrigan sighed relieved.
“What happened?” she asked him.
“I helped him free himself. I’m sorry I that pushed you out that way, mother, but it was the only way I could help him get rid of Mouse-Chatha.”
“Mouse-Chatha?” Carver frowned.
“This I have to hear.” Anders snickered.
“Mouse as in Mouse the Pride Demon?” Cullen shivered.
Kieran nodded.
A groan from Ewan interrupted our bickering. All of us reached for our weapon, but Kieran stopped us: “It’s all right, he’s free and himself.”
Slowly, the warden blinked and lifted himself in a sitting position with a moan: “Ugh, my head hurt less in the Fade...”
We all sighed in relief and I was surprised when Jowan of all people launched himself at him, hugging him in tears. Ewan was startled by the sudden move, but he pat his hand on his friend’s back in a soothing manner as Jowan was crying himself dry.
“Now, that’s hot.” I said with a grin while shifted beside them.
Cullen’s head snapped at me shocked and Jowan shot up like Ewan was suddenly on fire but the Warden just chuckled at me and squeezed Jowan’s butt making him jump and yelp.
“If you can get sex jokes and play along, you are fine.”
We all roared in laughter but Carver who looked absolutely scandalized “Guys, there’s a kid here!”
“So what?” Morrigan asked still laughing. “That makes it less funny?”
“If I know Morrigan, she didn’t bat around the bush about our son’s sexual education, cousin.” Ewan chuckled weakly.
“What happened to Chatha?” Cullen asked.
“I thought I could fight Chatha using Mouse,” he explained, “So I... uh... let him in. I tried to become an abomination to prevent being possessed from her, but they blended and she became an abomination.”
“That was foolish.” I said. “You're lucky you're still yourself... what happened to the... amalgam?”
“I... I don’t know, I managed to push her out of my mind and body, with Kieran's help, but I’m not sure where she went...” Ewan answered, “Probably I sent her back to her body...”
We all turned to the burned remains of the broodmother.
“Or maybe not.” he noted. “What the...”
“Anders was bored.” Carver joked.
“And Morrigan thought it may happen something like this, so she instructed us to burn the body.” Anders corrected him. Ewan sighed.
“If she didn’t find her body, she may still be trapped in the Fade who knows where...”
I shivered: “So she’s dead?”
“I won’t say that.” Morrigan admitted bitterly, “She’s an abomination, blended with a demon and able to possess bodies... She may have survived, but lost in the Fade... possibly forever.”
We all shivered thinking of it: death would have been a far better fate.
“I don’t think we’ll see her again soon, then.” I said
“Sounds fine to me.” Ewan sighed standing up, legs still shaking a bit. “I don't know about you but I've had enough of the deep roads to last for three lifetimes. Who wants to see the sky?”
We all lift our hands.

Epilogue

One year later, Antiva City

A man walked into the Maket plaza of the jewel of the Rivaini Bay. His name was Ewan Amell, Grey Warden, father, friend, lover.

He traveled the land far and wide to look for a man, and there it was: covered with his cured leather armor, still wearing the leather boots and the dalish gloves he gave him so long time ago.
“Zevran Arainai.” he yelled. All people in the square turned to look at him frightened: Zevran's name was a mark of shame and death through all Antiva, a man wanted by the Crows.
“I own your ass.” Ewan said with a grin.
“That’s quite a crude statement, Warden.” the elf replied. He slowly turned and walked towards him, arms open in a mock defiance: “Do you really want to defy a Crow here, in Antiva City?”
“That depends on how many Crows are there.” Ewan replied, his hands reaching for his swords.
“Oh, I think I’ve counted five in the marketplace.” Zevran bowed to a man behind a stall. The square started to empty.
“And there’s six more on the roof of that building.” Ewan unsheated Starfang and pointed at a palace near the chantry with it.
“There’s also three behind you.”
“And two to your left, I think you miscalculated.”
Zevran sighed “I know, I’m getting old. Are you sure you’re up to it?”
Ewan laughed: “You and me against a dozen Crows? I’ve seen worse.”
“Those were darkspawn.” Zevran reminded him waving his finger at him, “These are the infamous Crows of Antiva...”
Ewan pumped his fist and the two men that were sneaking behind Zevran were lifted in the air and then slammed on the ground. “Not famous for being good assassins, I see.” Ewan chuckled, remembering their first meeting.
The elf rolled his eyes: “Do you have to go there every time?”
“I’m your greatest fail...” the Warden said approaching the ridiculously awesome elf, “Your only mistake in a career of flawless murders...”
“Are you trying to say all that was a mistake?” Zevran furrowed his brows still smiling.
“Letting you live? No.” Ewan’s arms sneaked around the elf’s waist and pulled him against his body “Letting you go? Definitely.”
And as they kissed the Crows charged at them. They didn’t get far though, as two well aimed fireballs dispersed them unevenly around them.
“What’s that?” Zervan asked breaking the kiss.
“Oh, I got reinforcements.” Ewan grinned turning to Jowan and Eloise who waved at them before resuming their fight with the Crows.
Ewan and Zevran laughed and joined the fray. It was a good day for a little exercise...

***

In the years that followed this unusual, strange battle in the Fade, the world underwent so many changes. The mage revolution in Kirkwall, the Mage-Templar war and the Civil war in Orlais are just part of the series of events that culminated in the opening of the Breach.
Compared to what happened next, this quarrel with Chatha could be considered just as the Thaw's death throes... but how much worse could have been had Chatha be an interested party in the events that followed?

Some claim that Ewan went to Antiva chasing his lover, the Assassin Zevran. One rumor suggested the pair engaged in a terrible showdown in the Antivan capital, and others say that they took over the Crows. Perhaps both versions are true.
Some months later Zevran was spotted in Kirkwall, alone. It was rumored he befriended the Champion, as witnesses place him in the battle at the Gallows, helping Hawke fighting the mad commander Meredith. The Warden, however, had completely disappeared.
Only years later Sister Leliana managed to contact him on behalf of the Inquisition. His letter didn't share his whereabouts, but he did stated he was on a quest to free the Wardens from the Calling...

Ewan didn’t met Morrigan and their son again. She disappeared from the world only to reappear in Orlais five years later, where she became the arcane advisor to the empress Celene in lieu of Madame de Fer who had joined the reformed Inquisition.
She too had an important role in the events that followed the opening of the Breach, as she later became the liaison between the Empire and the Inquisition in Skyhold...

Jowan is still a wanted maleficar in the eyes of the Chantry, but few remember his name these days: even before the schism of the templars from the Chantry, very few templars were interested in chasing him, and after the Mage-Templar war started, no one wanted to pursue the cold case of a maleficar escaped a decade before.
Today he's but a funny story told by young mages, and a name that came to mean “something completely screwed up done with the best intentions.” Whether his actions in later life vindicated this disrepute, it is unknown...

Cullen returned to Kirkwall and took back his place as Knight-Captain of the Gallows. He carried a letter with the seal of the Commander of the Grey that described his mission in Jainen and the Deep Roads.
That was enough for Meredith to overlook his apparent desertion and restore his status, but she didn't seem to trust him like before: the Knight-Commander started seeking the help of the Champion of Kirkwall more frequently in the following months, even for matters that were - in theory - of Cullen's competence. All the more stranger, considering the Champion was a mage and a known apostate, and only his position and popular support had saved him from being locked up.
After the battle of Kirkwall, he held together the Circle and the city, and later joined the Inquisition as commander of the Inquisition army...

Eloise Surana never returned to the Circle, but her name appears in some documents of the Circle of Starkhaven in a list of outside-operating mages and war veterans.
As she imagined, Cullen choose his duty over her, but they parted on amicable terms. A couple of years later, with the start of the Mage-Templar War, it didn’t matter anymore, but at the time she had disappeared, just like the Warden.
Rumors have she had joined a Dalish clan in the Free Marches, others that she still travels with the Warden in a reformed company of the Hero of Ferelden...

The events that took place in Jainen, despite being witnessed just by one recruit, led to an internal debate between the Knight Commander and the First Enchanter in matters of security.
The First Enchanter eventually kicked the templars out of the Circle, claiming that it was withing the rights granted by the royal decree that gave independence to the Circles in Ferelden.
The Knight commander traveled to Val Royeaux, to ask for the Seeker's help, but he was arrested by the Left Hand of the Divine for abusing his position.
Because of the events that followed, the trial never took place. It seems that he is still imprisoned in Val Royeaux...

The strange new breed of darkspawn seemed to disappear from the woods of southern Ferelden. Not many people encountered them, and their appearance became nothing but a strange tale for taverns. The Brecilian forest returned to be as safe as it was before... which doesn't mean much.
As for Chatha, she disappeared into the depths of the Fade, perhaps she survived as a spirit, and maybe she still haunts the Warden's dreams...
Without Chatha blocking the way, the Darkspawn found the way to enter the isolated sections of the Deep Roads, following the song of the Old Gods and it’s only a matter of time before the cycle starts again...

...But these are tales yet to be told: ours, ended when Ewan banished Chatha into the Fade and our heroes got back to the surface to resume their lives.
As for Ewan and his friends, they adventure together still.

The End

This is a revised version of the story - not all parts match the comic version as they were adapted to the events and lore revealed after Dragon Age: Awakening. As it is, it may contain spoilers, hints or references at subsequent plots like Dragon Age IIDragon Age: InquisitionDragon Age LegendsThe Stolen ThroneThe CallingThe Silent GroveThe Last CourtThe Masked Empire and The Last Flight.

Here is the last chapter of a revised version of my comic In Peace Vigilance in the form of novel. If you want to know how the story ends, I suggest you to read it, as while I plan to continue the comic version and adapt it to this revised narration, I really have no deadline for it. When it will be up, I'll probably do a massive upload of the whole story, but in the meantime I decided to deliver it in this format.

So, finally here we are. This is the conclusion of the story, and I have to tell you: it didn't change as much as I expected from the original version, though it had to adjust MANY little (and big) things here and there.

The main change I had to make was Ewan's strategy to break Chata's control, and let me tell you it changed MANY times before I settled for this outcome. The first version of the story had Chatha defeated by Mouse who dragged her into the Fade to feed on her soul, which was cheap, lore-breaking and made literally no-sense, so I rewrote it having Morrigan joining the fight in the Fade with Ewan in which both Flemeth and Kieran (Uther, at the time) interfered helping them defeating Chatha/Mouse who had blended. This also couldn't be: since DAI I knew it had to be either Morrigan OR Flemeth... and I choose the latter, to put some hint at the "dreams" and the "soul not forced upon the unwilling" (new) rule. At a certain point I also had a scared Kieran avoiding touching the father in fear of destroying both their souls, but Ewan did it all the same since Kieran was already an amalgama of his son's soul and Urthemiel, but I had to revise this idea in light of the fact that in DAI it's hinted that Kieran and Urthemiel's souls coexist in one body but are separate. This changed also the idea I had of Kieran's fade aspect, changing from an ever-shifting boy-man-dragon-hybrid to a boy wrapped in a dragon's form.

The funny thing is that the idea of the golden griffon's heart didn't come from Kieran's outfit in DAI, but it was always there, since I had the idea of Kieran entering the Fade to save his dad. In my head, it was the manifestation of the link between Kieran and Urthemiel, the very core of his origin: "The child will bear the taint" Morrigan said in Origin, but as far as we can see Kieran is not infected by the Blight (and neither was Uther in the original script). I believe there is an element at the core of the very being of the OGB that has him linked the two souls through his father's legacy, hence a golden Warden's crest.

This chapter features also my version of "I am the One"'s lyrics. I have had a lot of trouble to write that part, but the whole chapter (and its title) was conceived around this song. My doubt come from the major problem this song has: the lyrics are basically unknown and the ones that you can find online (the ones that start as "Heruamin lothirien"), are unsourced and feature words of dubious legitimacy and structure compared to known elvish. The english version we can hear in Inquisition is probably as a loose translation as "Nightingale eyes" is to "Leliana's Song/Captivity" (LS-DLC soundtrack), and the only "translated" verses appear in an interview to Aburey Ashburn as "The wind of change forces an order upon me/ and fate is rolling in without any sympathy" (that I decided to put as second verse with totally made-up elvish words that matched the phonetics... just like about half of the rest of the lyrics, but whatever...) and it is unclear if it's a first draft or the actual translation of a verse... in any case, "good" elvish or not, I decided to stick to the original concept: I liked the idea of Kieran tapping into the Old God's powers through singing, as the Calling is often referred as a "Song", and "I Am the One" is THE song of Dragon Age: Origins, the game that inspired this story. If you don't like it, sue me, but don't take it as a reference for the elven language. You've been warned.

Another thing that ever-changed during the writing and re-writing was the "Epilogue slideshow" and the characters that appear in the Epilogue itself. It is obvious that, here, it takes into accounts both DA2 and DAI events, but originally all four protagonists were there, with a Cullen that had left the templars (before DA2, following the "crazy-epilogue" route I originally took). After DA2 was out, I had already rewritten it without Cullen and with Hawke and Anders joining the group instead, but I discarded the idea even before DAI.
As for the "slideshow", originally Lily's fate was unkown, as instead of Jainen the epilogue mentioned the anulment of Aeonar stating that she disappeared before the templars came, while Cullen's story ended with his reinstatement into the Order in Kirkwall and the ending of DA2. The epilogue was also originally set AFTER DA2's ending, while now is to be considered IMMEDIATELY before: Zevran left for Kirkwall shortly after the encounter with Ewan, and Ewan... well, you'll see if I'll ever get to write the sequel: "Seekers of Truth". :)

But as I said, "these are tales yet to be told." For now, this is the end of the story as I originally conceived it. Thank you all for reading it, for your support and patience. And as Alessandro Mazoni wrote "If you liked this story, have some affection to the one who wrote it, and some to the ones who fixed it. But if instead we bored you, believe that it wasn't intentional."

Jowan
“Are we there yet?”
“Just shut up.” Eloise growled. I sighed: for being our first experience in the Deep Roads -at least for three of us- we were holding it together well, but sometimes I felt the need to joke a bit, to loosen up... a need Eloise and Cullen did not share.
“That's weird.” Carver said, “I don't sense any darkspawn.”
“These are the roads, how can you possibly not sense any darkspawn?” Cullen asked with a frown.
“Creepy isn't it?” Anders joined in, “I sense something, but it's not a Darkspawn it's more like... a warden?”
Eloise looked at him alarmed: “You can sense Wardens? That's... a little too soon, isn't it?”
“Normally I don't.” Anders admitted, “All I know is I sense something, but I'm not sure of what it is... It's like darkspawn... abandoned this place. Look at the walls...” he pointed his glowing staff at

Disclaimer: This is a fan fiction based on the BioWare's videogame "Dragon Age: Origins" and its sequels and expansions.
The story was originally scripted as a comic before "Dragon Age: Asunder" and "Dragon Age: Redemption" were released, this is a rewriting of the story, but I tried to keep it as similar as the original, including scenes that were originally cut and modifying what I didn't like or what was proved wrong in the sequels. I played all the games and documented myself through the novels, the codex entries, the official comics and the Dragon Age Wiki, so if the comic explicitly contradicts some established lore it's because I decided it would fit the story better. If you intend to educate me on the True Dragon Age Lore, introduce yourself as David Gaider or save your keyboard.
All characters, except those not fitting the game belong to Bioware; their rendition is not to consider canon but a personal interpretation based on the work of the original writers. Aed Amell is a character created by emedeme and used with permission. All other characters are mine, based on BioWare's background for the player character.
The story is a "fan fiction" so it's not part of any official lore: any lore that has not included in the game is to be intended as speculation or plot device. Feel free to accept these hadcanons and even use them yourself, but take them as they are. As the story is based on how I played the game, it contains elements that come from popular mods such as Ser Gilmore Companion NPC.
