Born in Antiva, Callan was abducted when he was 10 and spent nine years of his life in Carastes as a slave. After he fled he returned to Antiva for another year before moving to rivaini ships and only recently to Ferelden.
When the Pompinii found out he was a mage, they taught him in secret to not lose their favourite pet to the Laetan caste, but at the same time intrigued by the opportunity to have a pupil on their own, hence his knowledge of Ancient Tevene. His knowledge of Dalish comes from his time in Rivaini, where he took any chance to pester every dalish clan he saw to learn the tongue of the People since he always admired them, though he never felt comfortable in living with them for too long.
